A Mykonian Bee Enjoying The First Day Of May

This May Day 2020 prohibits us from gathering with friends to celebrate in Greece, but the beauty surrounding us lifts our hearts with hope for good health and happiness everywhere.

The  May Day celebration (protomagia), marks the final victory of summer over winter, life over death. It’s roots date back to pre-Christian rural rites for fertility of the fields , animals and humans. Ιt is also International Worker’s Day.

A May Flower Wreath

The Greek custom of May Day is to decorate doors and balconies with flower wreaths made with handpicked wild or garden flowers.  The wreaths symbolise the power of nature protecting homes from enemies. For many in Greece this is a time for families to get together to enjoy food, music, dance and good company.
