Dance Plays An Important Role in the Life of Greeks. Mykonos Shows Us It’s Greek Spirit!

Greece is one place in the world where folk dance is very much alive and danced  as it was in ancient times.  Every dance has a story to tell with the dancers expressing  themselves  physically and emotionally.

It’s become an annual tradition on Palm  Sunday in Mykonos to gather together hundreds of islanders in a grand display dancing the traditional Hosapiko and Syrtaki.   Most people instantly recognize the famous “Zorba Dance” and music from the movie Zorba The Greek.  This dance (Syrtaki) is actually a choreographed version of the more traditional Hosapiko.   The Hosapiko has both a slow 4/4 meter and faster 2/4 version.  It is often danced with slow smooth moves that gradually transform into fast movements including leaps and hops.
